Planning a wedding is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life, but for many couples, it quickly turns into a mountain of logistics, bloated budgets, and overwhelming expectations. If you’ve found yourself questioning whether a 200-person event is actually what you want, trust me: you’re not alone.
My partner and I live across the country from our families and spent months deciding whether to elope or host a full wedding where we grew up. I, admittedly, fell into the Pinterest wedding trap. I convinced myself that if we eloped, I would never get the chance to plan something so beautiful and unique.
And let me tell you, it was A LOT.
We had to cut our guest list down significantly and took many friends and family members off of the list. We asked SO much of the people we love, and in the end, the people closest to us spent way more time working, setting up, and coordinating than actually celebrating with us. That was the final straw for me, and officially made me PRO-elopement.
I’ve realized that choosing to elope isn’t about running away or cutting corners—it’s about intentionally choosing an experience that centers on your relationship and your values.

If you’re on the fence about an elopement, here is why trading a traditional wedding for an elopement might be the best decision you ever make:
On a traditional wedding day, couples often spend hours greeting long-lost relatives, managing vendor timelines, and posing for endless group photos. By the end of the night, many couples realize they barely spent an hour alone together.
An elopement gives you the space to actually be present with your partner. Your wedding day should be about the promise you’re making to each other, not hosting an event for everyone else. When you strip away the strict timeline and crowd management, you get to slow down, hold hands, soak in the moments, and build core memories without feeling pulled in a dozen directions.
Why get married in a banquet hall where hundreds of people have said “I do” when you can say your vows somewhere extraordinary? Eloping lets you choose a location that speaks to your soul. It could be an alpine peak, a quiet coastal cliff, or a sentimental spot you’ve always loved visiting together.
Even better, an elopement seamlessly blends your ceremony into an unforgettable trip. Traditional weddings take so much time, money, and energy to organize that many couples end up postponing their honeymoon for a year or more just to recover from the stress. When you elope, your wedding day is the start of your journey together. You get to explore a destination you’ve always wanted to see without a mile-long to-do list hanging over your head.
It’s no secret that traditional weddings are expensive, but the “wedding tax” is very real. The moment event vendors or clothing retailers hear the word “wedding,” prices can skyrocket.
Eloping gives you financial freedom:
One of the biggest misconceptions about eloping is that you have to sacrifice celebrating with your family and friends. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We come from big midwest families and we had to cut our guest list so much that we couldn’t even invite our cousins. If we had separated our ceremony from our reception we would have had so much flexibility!
A few perks:
The traditional wedding industry generates a massive amount of waste. From single-use floral arrangements, personalized decor, plastic silverware to leftover food and travel emissions for hundreds of guests.
Choosing an elopement is inherently more eco-friendly. Leaving a minimal footprint on your wedding day allows you to honor your commitment to each other while staying mindful of the planet. Leaving no trace in a beautiful outdoor setting creates a meaningful, low-impact ceremony focused purely on natural beauty.
